Pastoral Elder | Church Council Chairman

Gene Pinkard

Gene has served as an elder at Grace Church for more than thirty-five years. From the day he was born, Gene has been associated with Grace Church and its forerunner First Brethren Church. At Grace, he has served as a Sunday school teacher, assistant Sunday school superintendent, Bible quizzing team coach, and he sang in the choir.

After spending two years in the Army, Gene began teaching math and Bible at Calvert Christian School in 1972.  Since then, Gene has spent his life both teaching and acting as headmaster and assistant principle in two Christian schools. He has a BS degree in Mathematics from the University of Maryland and he currently volunteers at Lanham Christian School teaching PreAlgebra, Honors PreCalculus and AP Calculus.

Gene was married for almost forty years to his wife Jackie who served as the organist, choir director, and music director at Grace Church. In 2014 Jackie went to be with the Lord. Gene has two grown children, Robert Pinkard and Amy Moffitt, a son-in-law Andy Moffitt, and two grandsons, Colin and Jack Moffitt.


Teaching Elder

Carleton Hafer

After graduating from Washington Bible College, Carleton received his Masters of Divinity and Masters of Theology degrees from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. He has been an adjunct professor at Washington Bible College and Lancaster Bible College where he taught classes in Biblical Studies and Theology.  Previously, he also spent ten years singing in the National Christian Choir and served in various leadership positions including choir president.

Carleton is a native of the Washington, DC area. He has been a computer professional for more than thirty-five years, is a senior network engineer, and is the owner of Genesis Networking located in Bowie, Maryland.  He also holds numerous Microsoft, Novell, and Cisco certifications and has appeared as an expert witness in numerous court cases.

Carleton is married to Linda Albertson Hafer. In 1995, Linda moved to Maryland from British Columbia to pursue a professional music career. In 1996, they were married and they both enjoy traveling to unusual locations throughout the world and have traveled to the Arctic, much of Europe, Japan, and numerous places throughout the United States and Canada. He also specializes in using air miles and points so that many of their trips are almost free.


Teaching Elder | Exec. Dir. of Lanham Christian School

Randall Burr

Mr. Burr is a graduate (Cum Laude) from Liberty University, is an ordained Baptist minister and has spent the past twenty years in the ministry.  He served on the staff of Fellowship Baptist Church, Chesapeake (VA) before serving as the Senior Pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church, Savannah (GA) and Decatur Heights Baptist Church, Bladensburg (MD).  In 2006 he joined the administrative team of LCS.  For the past 5 years he has served as the Executive Director of LCS and he is a teaching elder at Grace Church.



Jose Castillo

Jose heard about Grace Church from a friend, visited with his family, and has been an active member since 2006. His interests and skills range from beekeeping to home remodeling, and you can often find him enjoying the outdoors and everything God’s creation has to offer (coffee, chocolate, and natural remedies are among his favorites).

He earned his degree in Agriculture in his birth country of Guatemala (USAC) and visits as often as he can. Jose and his wife have been married for thirty years and have enjoyed raising their three children together.

Eric Smith

Eric has a passion for reaching the next generation for Christ. Eric joined the Grace team in 2015 after receiving his Bachelors degree from Lancaster Bible College and his Masters in Theological Studies from Liberty University. A native of Pennsylvania, Eric is an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. He also enjoys reading, watching movies, and eating good food.



Debbie Harten

Debbie and her husband, Rob, have attended Lanham Grace since they moved to Maryland in 1977.  She was saved at the age of 13 through the Church of the Brethren in Altoona, PA.  She enjoys reading, spending time with her family, and taking care of the little ones in the church.  Debbie has served as church secretary under three pastors dating back to 1993.   She prepared for this ministry by being a legal secretary, public school secretary, and mother of two now grown sons!  She is the communication hub of our church during the week and the head of our nursery ministry on Sundays.
